Norfolk Naval Shipyard Seeks +40,000-Square-Foot Modular Construction
A building at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard was deemed unfit for occupancy due to fire hazards. NAVFAC Mid Atlantic needed two buildings to house staff for an undetermined amount of time.
SMM built one 8,910-square-foot and one 33,858-square-foot permanent modular building constructed with steel framing to serve as both administrative and classroom space. The buildings featured covered joining breezeway and an elevator to meet ADA requirements. SMM provided building foundations, delivery, and installation of the modular building sections with a crane. SMM installed a two-story elevator with adjoining mechanical rooms, aluminum exterior stairwells, breezeways, canopies, decks, and ramps to connect the first and second stories. SMM also provided a fire alarm with mass notifications, fire sprinklers, furniture including cubicles, office furniture, conference room tables, classroom tables, bookcases, and chairs as well as utility connections.
